Life Insurance: Protecting the People and Plans That Matter

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, making it a good time to ask an important question: If something happened to you, would the people you love have the financial resources they need?

Life insurance is not simply about preparing for the end of life. It is about protecting the life your family has built-and helping the people who depend on you continue moving forward.

What Could Life Insurance Help Protect?

Every family’s needs are different, but life insurance may help provide funds for:

  • Replacing lost household income

  • Mortgage or rent payments

  • Everyday living expenses

  • Outstanding debts

  • Final expenses and medical bills

  • Childcare and future education costs

  • Business obligations

  • Financial support for a surviving spouse

Think about everything your income helps provide each month. If that income suddenly disappeared, how long could your family comfortably maintain its current lifestyle?

That is the conversation life insurance is designed to address.

Life Insurance Is Not Only for the Primary Breadwinner

A common misconception is that only the person earning the largest paycheck needs life insurance.

A stay-at-home spouse or caregiver may provide childcare, transportation, meal preparation, household management and many other valuable services. Replacing those responsibilities could create a significant expense for the surviving family.

Life insurance should be considered based on the financial impact of losing someone-not only the around shown on their paycheck.

Major Life Changes Should Prompt a Coverage Review

Life insurane is not something you should purchase and then forget. Your needs can change as your life changes.

It may be time to review your coverage following:

  • Marriage or divorce

  • The birth or adoption of a child

  • The purchase of a home

  • A change in employment or income

  • Starting or purchasing a business

  • Taking responsibility for an aging parent

  • Co-signing a loan

  • Children entering college

  • Retirement

  • A significant change in health

Do You Know Who Your Beneficiaries Are?

Beneficiary designations determine who is intended to receive the policy proceeds. These designations should be reviewed regularly-especially after a marriage, divorce, birth, death or other major family changes.

Do not assume that updating a will automatically updates the beneficiaries listed on a life insurance policy. Reviewing the actual policy paperwork can help prevent confusion later.

How Much Coverage Is Enough?

There is no single amount that is right for everyone. The answer depends on your income, debts, family responsibilities, existing savings and long term goals.

A helpful review may include questions such as:

  • Who depends on my income or care?

  • What debts would remain?

  • How much income would my family need each month?

  • Are there future education expenss to consider?

  • Do I own a business or have business-related obligations?

  • What savings and existing coverage are already available?

  • How long would financial support be needed?

The goal is not simply to purchase a policy. The goal is to understand what you are protecting and choose coverage that fits your priorities and budget.

Start With Education

Life insurance can feel complicated because there are different policy types, coverage amounts and premium structures. You should understand what you are considering, why it may fit your needs and what you can reasonably maintain.

At The Guffey Group, education comes first. I take the time to explain the options, answer questions and help clients make informed decisions without pressure.

Life Insurance Awareness Month is the perfect time to review your existing coverage-or begin the conversation if you do not currently have a plan.
