Your 2027 Medicare Review: Five Things to Check Before Changing Coverage

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7. During this time, people with Medicare can review their health and prescription drug coverage and make changes for 2027 if they choose.

You do not have to change plans just because Open Enrollment has started. But even if you like your current coverage, it is wise to see what may change on January 1. Here are five places to start.

  1. Read your Annual Notice of Change: If you have a Medicare health or drug plan, look for the Annual Notice of Change your plan sends each fall. It explains changes to costs, coverage, and other plan details for the coming year. Mark anything you do not understand so you can ask about it during your review.

  2. Check every prescription: Bring an up-to-date list of your medications, including the name, dosage, and how often you take each one. A drug plan that worked well this year may have different costs or coverage next year. Include the pharmacy you prefer to use, since pharmacy choice can affect what you pay.

  3. Confirm your doctors and hosptials: If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, check whether your preferred doctors, specialists, and hospitals participate in the plan for 2027. If you are comparing a new plan, ask the providers and the plan to confirm participation before making a decision.

  4. Look beyond the monthly premium: Consider the full picture: deductibles, copays, coinsurance, prescription costs, and the plan’s yearly out-of-pocket limit for covered medical services. A lower premium does not always mean lower overall costs for the care you expect to use.

  5. Think about what changed in your life: Did you start a new medication? Begin seeing a specialist? Move, travel more often, or change pharmacies? Your needs today may differ from when you first chose your coverage. A good review starts with what matters to you now.

At the Guffey Group, education comes first. We’ll help you understand your current coverage, compare the choices available to you, and ask the right questions. If your plan still fits, that is useful to know, too.
